Colin, Paul

Colin, Paul (1892-1985) – Oil painting on canvass of a female nude model in the artist’s studio. Height: 82 cms. Width: 62 cms. France / 1930 – 1935

Known for his many graphic posters and especially those for Josephine Baker, for whom he issued many illustrations for ‘la revue nègre’ et ‘le tumulte noir’ (1927). Besides for Josephine Baker he made many posters for other stage artists with lots of movement in his designs. He also designed theater decors and made costume designs. But above all he is a caricaturist. Clear lines, bright coloring. In 1929 he founded his own drawing school which lasted until 1970. During his long career he designed more than 1.400 posters. However, paintings by his hand are quite rare.
