Bugatti, Carlo

Bugatti, Carlo (1856-1940) – Blessed with an almost incredible eye for designing decorative art, combined with an immense creativity, Carlo Bugatti designed furniture with a Moorish/Byzantine appearance. All of Bugatti’s furniture is recognizable for its very own style. His children Ettore Bugatti (1881-1947) and Rembrandt Bugatti (1884-1916) were both, like their father, blessed with an artist eye; Ettore designed cars and Rembrandt sculpture, so quite a a renowned family. Carlo was trained at the Brera academy in Milan after which he entered the Académie des Beaux Arts in Paris. The furniture manufacturing started as early as 1880. He took part in major exhibitions in France and Italy (Turin – 1902). He kept his workshop in Milan up until 1904 after which he went to France (Pierrefonds). This chair dates from around 1898/1900’s and consists of the following materials; sculpted and ebonised wood, brass applications, pewter inlays, bone applications, painted vellum and tassels.
