Goupy, Marcel

Marcel Goupy (1886-1954) – This vase shows an enamelled image of jumping doe deer in foliage. Goupy was a pupil at the ‘École nationale des Arts Décoratifs’ in Paris. Primarily starting as a painter and water colorist, his preference soon went to lean towards the applied arts with an emphasis on ceramics and glass. The acquaintance with art publisher and dealer Georges (Geo) Rouard was decisive for the further course of his career. Rouard started his luxury shop (‘Cristallerie de la Paix’) in 1909 on the Rue de L’Opéra in Paris. As from 1919 Goupy became head of the design department where he ,until 1923, worked closely together with Auguste Claude Heiligenstein (1891-1976) and other known glass and ceramic designers. After the passing of Rouard in 1929 Goupy was made artistic director of the firm for which he continued working until his death in 1954. A similar vase, with another color scheme, is to be found at the Victoria and Albert museum (V&A) in London. Height: 25 cms.; signature on the bottom: M. Goupy.; Period: 1925.
