Brandt, Edgar (1880-1960)

Edgar Brandt – In his first studio in Paris, which he started in 1901, primarily small silver and wrought iron decorative items and jewelry were produced. Prior to his celebrated artistry as a metalworker of the Art Deco period he also designed furniture. He was impressed by the work of Louis Majorelle (1859-1926) which he saw at the Exposition Universelle in1900. In particular he was struck by the bronze mounts Majorelle attached to his furniture and by the woodcarving. Brandt’s first furniture designs were exhibited at the Salon d’ Automne of 1904. Brandt did not shy away from using the then new machinery in the manufacturing process. However, the carved maple leaf decorations on this elegant mirror cabinet and the wrought iron fittings are made by hand. Material: Walnut wood. Height: 2.02 m.; Width: 75 cms.; Depth: 40 cms.
